X12 214 Shipment Status Update
This Draft Standard for Trial Use contains the format and establishes the data contents of the Transportation Carrier Shipment Status Message Transaction Set (214) for use within the context of an Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) environment. This transaction set can be used by a transportation carrier to provide shippers, consignees, and their agents with the status of shipments in terms of dates, times, locations, route, identifying numbers, and conveyance.

To transmit identifying numbers and other basic data relating to the transaction set

- B1001 is the carrier assigned reference number.
- B1001 is the carrier's PRO (invoice number) that identifies the shipment.
Identification number assigned to the shipment by the shipper that uniquely identifies the shipment from origin to ultimate destination and is not subject to modification; (Does not contain blanks or special characters)
The reference options for this element are: Shipper Reference, Purchase Order, Invoice Number, Department, Shipment Information. Tracking Number or Bill of Lading. The Shipper Reference is the default. If you want one of the other references, please request it the time the setup is requested.

If the customer does not want this L11, which will contain the Purchase Order Number, please let us know at the time of the request.
The default for the element is the Purchase Order Number(Reference) with a PO qualifier. The other references are Invoice, Shipment Information, Shipper Reference, Department, Tracking Number, Master Tracking Number, POD Name or Bill of Lading. If you want additional or other references, please request this option at the time you request the new setup.
If the customer wishes to receive the Service Code in this L11, please request this option at the time you request the new setup. The default qualifier is QY.

To indicate identifying marks and numbers for shipping containers
If the customer wants to receive the Master Tracking Number and the Full Bar Code Tracking Number, please request this segment at the time of the request. You will need to provide the qualifier the customer wants in the MAN01 Element.
Code specifying the application or source of Marks and Numbers (87)
- MAN01/MAN02 and MAN04/MAN05 may be used to identify two different marks and numbers assigned to the same physical container.
- When MAN01 contains code "UC" (U.P.C. Shipping Container Code) and MAN05/MAN06 contain a range of ID numbers, MAN03 is not used. The reason for this is that the U.P.C. Shipping Container code is the same on every carton that is represented in the range in MAN05/MAN06.
Marks and numbers used to identify a shipment or parts of a shipment
- When both MAN02 and MAN03 are used, MAN02 is the starting number of a sequential range and MAN03 is the ending number of that range.
This value will be the Master Tracking Number or the Full Bar Code Tracking Number.

Shipment Status Details
To specify the status of a shipment, the reason for that status, the date and time of the status and the date and time of any appointments scheduled.

- If AT701 is present, AT705 is the date the status occurred. If AT703 is present, AT705 is a date related to an appointment.
- If AT701 is present, AT706 is the time of the status. If AT703 is present, AT706 is the time of the appointment.

In accordance with International Standards Organization standard 8601, time can be specified by a + or - and an indication in hours in relation to Universal Time Coordinate (UTC) time; since + is a restricted character, + and - are substituted by P and M in the codes that follow
