This Draft Standard for Trial Use contains the format and establishes the data content of the Application Control Totals Transaction Set (831) for use within the context of an Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) environment. The transaction set can be used to transmit totals associated with a collection of like transactions. The items reported in this transaction set must be of the same transaction set ID code.

  1. To indicate the start of a transaction set and to assign a control number

  2. To indicate the beginning of a transaction set.

  3. To specify pertinent dates and times

    One occurence of the DTM, N9, or TRN segment must be present. The DTM segments are used to provide a start/end date or time range.
  4. To transmit identifying numbers and descriptive information as specified by the reference number qualifier

  5. To uniquely identify a transaction to an application.

  6. To indicate the total monetary amount.

    At least one AMT or QTY segment is required.
  7. To specify quantity information.

  8. To indicate the end of the transaction set and provide the count of the transmitted segments (including the beginning (ST) and ending (SE) segments).
