Spotlight: Ali Khokhar @ Concurrence

A spotlight is a short-form interview with a leader in health tech. In this spotlight, you'll hear from Ali Khokhar, co-founder and CEO of Concurrence.

What does Concurrence do?

Concurrence (formerly Amigo) is the healthcare data and AI platform for leading institutions to deliver AI-powered care. We partner with health systems, payers, and biopharma companies to build agentic solutions on a unified data foundation that improve quality and reduce total cost of care.

We start by unifying the organization’s data into what we call the Health World Model. On top of this layer, we build and deploy AI agents across the care journey, through use cases like patient intake, medication management, and clinical decision support.

Each patient or provider interaction generates rich data that flows back into the Health World Model, which allows us to identify potential trajectories from intervention to outcome that surface what is most likely to work best for which patients.

How did you end up working in health tech?

My mom was diagnosed with cancer when I was a kid. After feeling a lump, she went to two different doctors who both told her she was worried about nothing. One full year later they found the cancer.

Each new specialist referral felt like rebuilding her context from scratch. And while my mom was going through chemo and eventually passed away, my family was responsible for holding the whole thing together.

I don’t blame the individual providers in this story. It’s not like they didn’t care or weren’t good at their jobs, but that the system around them wasn’t built to sustain a deep understanding of the patient.

Our system has extraordinary clinicians and more medical knowledge than we’ve ever had, but outcomes are still incredibly dependent on individuals remembering, pattern-matching, and making connections. A health system can care for millions of people, and very little of that experience compounds for the next person.

This is the opportunity I see for AI. I think we finally have the technology to capture and preserve all the rich data that gets lost in the course of someone’s health journey, which can then be used to predict what the best course of action will be for each unique patient.

How does your role intersect with revenue cycle management (RCM)?

Revenue cycle work depends on information that gets created during patient care interactions, and this is where Concurrence sits. Generating and recording the right data during these encounters is crucial for billing downstream.

Beyond real-time eligibility checks, our agents are designed to ensure the capture of key details that may impact claims down the road, like which plan is primary when there are multiple, whether coverage changed since the last visit, injury or workers' comp involvement, or even which communications channel is most effective to reach the patient.

This includes clinical data as well, such as the specifics that substantiate medical necessity like symptom severity, functional impairment, session time, and prior treatment and response.

What do you think RCM will look like two years from now?

Appeals will effectively become free.

Providers will automate submission and appeal generation while payers will automate adjudication and review. Payers will respond to cheap appeals by demanding more documentation up front, which makes it even more important for the data captured during the episode of care to be comprehensive and correct.

And when there is less money to recover on billing, the remaining lever to control revenue loss will simply be whether or not the billable visit happened.

A patient due for a mammogram who never makes it to the visit is lost revenue, and the focus will shift to reaching this patient, convincing her to schedule the appointment, and getting her through the door.

Overall, I think maximizing revenue capture and delivering proactive, continuous care will converge into a single goal.
