Switch to Stedi
If you’re building RCM software and need to process healthcare transactions, you have two choices: a traditional clearinghouse or Stedi.
Introduction
Traditional clearinghouses are designed for manual workflows and batch EDI processing.
Traditional clearinghouses aren’t built for modern development practices. Many were created before cloud computing, REST APIs, or JSON existed.
Hundreds of fast-growing, tech-forward healthcare teams use Stedi. This guide explains why so many have switched – and how you can get started.
Where traditional clearinghouses fall short
Teams developing on traditional clearinghouses tend to run into three core problems:
1. No programmatic access.
Many features aren’t available through APIs. Automation and agentic workflows require brittle workarounds like screen scraping, PDF parsing, or email capture.
2. Unreliable payer coverage.
Outages, lossy responses, and limited payer coverage break your workflows.
3. Unresponsive support.
Tickets can go unanswered for days or weeks. When they are, you get shallow or boilerplate responses.
Why teams are switching to Stedi
Switching to Stedi helps teams regain speed and scale:
1.
Stedi is API-first and AI-ready.
Stedi’s APIs are fast, JSON-native, and well-documented. If you’re building an AI agent, you can connect using the Stedi MCP server. Many teams integrate in less than a day.
2.
Stedi offers the broadest, most reliable payer coverage.
Stedi connects to virtually every U.S. healthcare payer, including commercial medical, dental, Medicare, and Medicaid. We offer a Payer Search API and the Payer Network site.
Where possible, we offer redundant connections with automatic failover and 99.9% uptime SLA.
3.
Stedi has real-time support.
Every customer gets a dedicated Slack or Teams channel, with average response times under 10 minutes. In some cases, the Stedi Agent can help you automate and troubleshoot issues without the need for support at all.
We built Stedi from the ground up to bring a world-class developer experience to healthcare. Meticulous engineering with no compromises.
Who’s switching

How switching works
Switching is fast and easy.
To get started:
1.
Create a Stedi account.
Sign up for free. Free accounts have access to our sandbox environment with API access for mock eligibility checks.
2.
Get in touch with our team.
After you create an account, our team will get in touch immediately. You can also send us a message.
3.
See if Stedi is the right fit.
Request a free trial to run Stedi in production alongside your existing clearinghouse to compare performance, reliability, developer experience, and support. Many teams run both in parallel to make an informed decision.
4.
Migrate your transaction workflows.
You can transition at your own pace. Many teams are able to integrate with Stedi in a day or two.
To make migration easy, we offer payer ID aliases. You can continue using your existing payer IDs with Stedi – no manual mapping required.
We also offer fully managed, API-based transaction enrollment. Stedi handles 95% of the enrollment work for you, including paperwork and payer follow-up. Many payers support one-click enrollment, which lets you enroll a provider with a single request - no paperwork at all.
Stedi normalizes every transaction you send to improve payer acceptance. You don’t have to write custom code to handle non-conforming payers.
Tips for evaluating Stedi

If you’re comparing Stedi against another clearinghouse, follow these tips for the best results.
Eligibility checks
Test with real patient data, not mock eligibility checks.
Create basic routing rules to send checks for your top 10–20 payers (by volume) to Stedi while keeping others on your existing clearinghouse. Implement fallback logic to retry failed requests through Stedi.
Compare eligibility responses. Stedi offers lossless eligibility responses. If you suspect your clearinghouse is dropping data, compare eligibility responses for your top payers from your existing clearinghouse to responses from Stedi.
Claims submission
Submit claims through Stedi while keeping your existing ERA enrollments in place. Providers can be enrolled with multiple clearinghouses for claims submission.
Most payers don’t require transaction enrollment for claims submission. There's no risk of disrupting existing claim processing while you evaluate Stedi.
Electronic Remittance Advice (ERAs)
Evaluate Stedi with specific payers. If you have payers where you’re missing ERAs or if your current ERA enrollment process is slow or cumbersome, try enrolling your first few providers or payers with Stedi to compare the experience.
Start with smaller payers first. A provider’s ERAs can only be sent to one clearinghouse at a time.
ERA enrollment is independent of claims. Enrolling for ERAs with Stedi doesn’t require you to move claim submissions over. You can evaluate Stedi for ERAs while continuing to submit claims through your current clearinghouse.
Automate enrollment. Use Stedi’s Enrollment API to handle transaction enrollment for your providers.
