Televero Behavioral Health scales patient eligibility checks with Stedi

Televero Behavioral Health is an online behavioral health practice built for speed. Patients start care the day they reach out. No referrals, no weeks-long wait for a first appointment.

What sets Televero apart is coordination. A doctor leads each patient's care team of licensed therapists and psychiatrists. Therapy, psychiatry, and testing stay under one team, not scattered across providers the patient has to manage themselves.

Challenge

Every new patient visit starts with an eligibility check: confirming insurance coverage and benefits before care begins. Televero also refreshes that check before each follow-up appointment, since coverage can change.

Coordinated care makes this harder than a standard eligibility check. Payers require a Service Type Code (STC) that tells them which benefits you're asking about: MH for mental health, A6 for psychotherapy, and so on.

One STC only reveals one slice of a patient's coverage. A single Televero patient seeing a therapist, a psychiatrist, and a neuropsychologist needs several STCs checked to confirm the full picture.

Televero's previous vendor could only run one STC per patient. That meant staff saw a fraction of each patient's coverage and had to track down the rest manually. As Televero grew, that manual work became the bottleneck.

"We wanted to transition off our previous eligibility vendor as fast as humanly possible," says Brian Tucker, Televero's Chief Digital Officer. "Anything that gets us full visibility into patient coverage across multiple STC codes beats what we had before."

Solution

Televero replaced its previous vendor with Stedi's JSON Real-Time Eligibility Check and Batch Eligibility Check APIs.

With Stedi, Televero could run multiple concurrent eligibility checks, each with a different STC, for the same patient and payer at the same time. Instead of staff manually tracking down coverage, Televero verifies and onboards patients in seconds.

For existing patients, a twice-monthly batch job re-verifies coverage ahead of follow-up appointments, catching insurance changes before patients arrive. The same batch process handles the surge at year-end, when most benefit plans renew.

Televero's development team had Stedi running within a day.

"With Stedi, the team had a production API key within 15 minutes. Our developers had the test API running about two hours later," says Brian.

Results

Since switching to Stedi, Televero's eligibility volume and patient count have climbed steadily. Televero now onboards 1,500 new patients a month, each triggering multiple eligibility checks that run in the background with little to no manual follow-up.

The batch workflow re-checks coverage twice a month for roughly 3,000 patients with upcoming follow-up appointments.

"In behavioral health, when a patient is ready, you have to be ready," says Brian. "Any friction, any break in that momentum, and you risk losing them before they get care. Stedi removed friction we could actually measure."

Without the overhead of manual insurance verification, Televero has added patients and service lines without adding headcount.

That's freed staff to spend their time on higher-value work instead of chasing paperwork. Stedi's payer coverage has also fueled Televero's expansion into 43 states, where it now checks eligibility across more than 200 insurance plans.

That growth shows up in Televero's numbers outside of eligibility, too: the company ranks #54 on the Inc. 5000, with 4,962% three-year growth.
