This Draft Standard for Trial Use contains the format and establishes the data contents of the Motor Carrier Shipment Information Transaction Set (204) for use within the context of an Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) environment. The transaction set can be used to provide the motor carrier with detailed bill of lading, rating, and scheduling information pertinent to a motor carrier shipment. It is used to tender a shipment to a motor carrier and/or forward motor carrier shipment details to a motor carrier or third party. It is the initial shipment tender between the shipper and the motor carrier and can be used as an advance pick-up notification (load tender) and/or a legal bill of lading.

What is an EDI 204?

An EDI 204 Motor Carrier Load Tender communicates shipment requests to the freight industry from a freight broker to a carrier. It contains information about the shipment details, including the number of stops (S5 segment), the pickup and delivery dates (G62 segment), and the size of the shipment (AT8 segment).

How is an EDI 204 used?

For example, Broker A sends an EDI 204 Motor Carrier Load Tender to Carrier B requesting pallet pickup. Carrier B responds with an EDI 990 Response to Load Tender accepting the shipment. If Carrier B rejects the shipment, Broker A would then send the 204 to the next best carrier.

      Loop 0100 can be used to identify all parties associated with the shipment. This includes the ship-from (consignor, shipper) or the ship-to (consignee) location when only one pick-up or delivery location is required. Stop-offs are transmitted in the 0300 and 0310 loops. Small package carriers may receive the consignee's name and address in the 0420 loop when the shipper is using the 204 as a manifest containing multiple shipments. The shipper and consignee shall be identified in loop 0100 for all Less-Than-Truckload (LTL) shipments. The shipper (first stop in a multi-stop) shall always be identified in loop 0100 for truckload (TL) carriers. The shipper shall always be identified in loop 0100 for small package carriers.
